Neodusmetia (Neodusmetia sangwani) is a small insect species belonging to the Hemiptera order and the Pseudococcidae family, commonly known as mealybugs. Within the agricultural sector, it is recognized as a significant pest primarily affecting various types of turfgrass and forage grasses.

The primary host for this pest is the bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon). Neodusmetia specializes in colonizing these plants, often causing substantial damage in regions where such grasses are extensively grown for lawns, sports fields, and soil stabilization, leading to significant economic losses in turf maintenance.

The biological cycle of this mealybug involves several developmental stages, from eggs to nymphs and finally adult insects. The pest typically resides beneath the leaf sheaths, where it remains protected from external environmental factors. This hidden mode of life makes early detection challenging, often allowing the population to reach high densities before visible symptoms appear.

The damage caused by Neodusmetia results from the extraction of plant sap, which deprives the host grass of vital nutrients. Visible symptoms include yellowing, wilting, and thinning of the turf canopy. Furthermore, the secretion of honeydew can encourage the growth of sooty mold, further compromising the plant's health and aesthetic value.
