The Hieroglyphic leafhopper (Neokolla hieroglyphica) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is named for the distinct, complex, hieroglyphic-like patterns found on its head and thorax, which serve as a primary diagnostic feature for entomologists identifying the species in the field.

This insect is a known polyphagous pest that targets a wide range of woody hosts. It is frequently observed causing damage to species within the Salicaceae and Rosaceae families, including ornamental shrubs and various fruit-bearing trees. Its ability to adapt to different environments makes it a persistent challenge in both commercial nurseries and forest ecosystems.

The life cycle of Neokolla hieroglyphica involves incomplete metamorphosis. The insect typically overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs embedded in the bark of twigs or leaf tissue. Upon hatching, the nymphs go through five instar stages, feeding aggressively on plant sap. During the growing season, multiple generations may occur in warmer regions, leading to overlapping populations that complicate control efforts.

The primary damage occurs when both nymphs and adults pierce plant tissues to extract sap. This feeding process leads to characteristic stippling, chlorosis, and leaf curling. In severe infestations, the cumulative stress on the plant can lead to stunted growth, early defoliation, and reduced vigor. Furthermore, leafhoppers are recognized vectors for various plant pathogens, potentially spreading diseases that are more damaging than the direct feeding itself.
