Description

Neolasioptera is a genus of gall midges belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae within the order Diptera. These small flies are significant agricultural pests known for their ability to induce the formation of galls — abnormal tissue growth — on various host plants, which provides both food and protection for their developing larvae.

The host range of this pest includes various agricultural, horticultural, and wild plant species. They are particularly known for infesting stems and floral structures of plants in families such as Asteraceae and Solanaceae. By attacking the structural parts of the plant, these midges can cause substantial physiological stress to the host organism.

The life cycle of the Neolasioptera begins with the female depositing eggs into the plant tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae secrete substances that trigger the plant to produce a gall. The larvae feed on the internal tissues of the gall until they reach maturity, at which point they typically pupate either within the gall itself or in the surrounding soil, depending on the species.
