Description
Systematic position: The hibiscus gall midge (Neolasioptera hibisci) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is a highly specialized pest whose life cycle is intrinsically linked to plants of the Malvaceae family, particularly those within the Hibiscus genus.
Host plants and damage symptoms: The primary target of this pest is the hibiscus plant. The midge induces the formation of specific growths, known as galls, on stems, branches, and leaf petioles. Within these abnormal tissue swellings, larvae develop by feeding on the plant's juices, which leads to stunted growth, shoot deformation, and reduced vigor of the host plant.
Biology and life cycle: The adult stage is a small fly. Females deposit eggs into the tissues of young shoots. Upon hatching, the larvae trigger pathological tissue proliferation, creating a protective gall structure. The life cycle consists of egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages, with overwintering often occurring inside the mature galls on the affected plant parts.
Economic impact: A significant infestation disrupts the nutrient transport system of the plant. Severely affected shoots frequently wilt, dry out, or break at the site of the galls. Furthermore, the damaged tissue serves as an entry point for secondary fungal and bacterial infections, which can ultimately lead to the death of individual branches or the entire ornamental bush.
Control measures: The primary management strategy is cultural. Regular inspection of plants and the prompt removal and destruction of infested shoots are critical to preventing further spread.
