Description

Neolimnus is a genus of insects within the family Cicadellidae, commonly known as leafhoppers. The most economically significant member of this genus is Neolimnus egyptiacus, which is recognized as a major pest in various agricultural regions, particularly in warmer climates where it can thrive throughout the growing season.

This pest is known for its wide host range, primarily targeting vegetable and industrial crops. Common hosts include tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, and cucumbers. Furthermore, numerous weed species serve as alternative hosts, allowing the population to persist and spread effectively even when primary crops are not available.

The biology of this pest involves a gradual metamorphosis, progressing through egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females lay their eggs directly into the plant tissues, providing protection during early development. The population density is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with multiple generations per year contributing to high infestation rates.

The damage caused by Neolimnus is two-fold. Firstly, both nymphs and adults feed on plant sap, causing leaves to chlorose, curl, and wither, which stunts the plant's overall growth. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, Neolimnus acts as a vector for various phytoplasmas and plant viruses, which can devastate crop yields and quality.

Effective management and control measures are critical to minimizing economic losses:
