Description
Neolygus is a genus of plant bugs belonging to the family Miridae, order Hemiptera. These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests that affect a variety of woody plants, particularly focusing on orchard fruit trees and ornamental nursery stock.
The primary hosts for Neolygus species include apple, pear, and several deciduous trees. The insects feed on the sap of young buds, leaves, and developing fruitlets. By inserting their piercing-sucking mouthparts into the plant tissue, they extract nutrients, which disrupts the normal development of the host plant.
The biological development of this pest follows a typical lifecycle for mirid bugs, starting with overwintering eggs laid in the bark of trees. In the spring, nymphs hatch and begin feeding immediately. They undergo several nymphal instars before reaching the adult stage, typically coinciding with the early growth flush of trees.
Damage caused by Neolygus is often characterized by leaf deformation, chlorotic spotting, and necrosis. When they feed on developing fruits, the puncture sites result in scarring, pitting, and malformation.
