Description
Systematic position: The green apple plant bug (Neolygus invitus) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. It is a common plant bug species known to cause economic losses in orchards throughout North America and parts of Eurasia.
Crops damaged: The species primarily attacks apple and pear trees. While it is most notorious for its impact on fruit production, it can also inhabit various deciduous trees and wild shrubs, which may act as reservoir hosts during the summer months.
Biology and life cycle: Neolygus invitus completes one generation per year. Eggs are overwintered within the bark of twigs. Nymphs emerge in early spring, coinciding with the bud burst of apple trees. They progress through five nymphal stages before reaching adulthood, with adults present in orchards from late spring until late summer.
Nature of damage and harm: Feeding damage occurs when nymphs and adults pierce tender plant tissues with their mouthparts, injecting toxic saliva. This causes leaf distortion, tip dieback, and the development of distorted, pitted fruits, often referred to as cat-facing or dimpling, which makes the fruit unmarketable.
Protection measures: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential. Growers should scout for nymphs shortly after bloom and apply selective insecticides if populations exceed economic thresholds. Cultural practices such as cleaning up leaf litter and removing infested shoot tips can help reduce local populations, and maintaining natural enemy habitats is encouraged.
