Description

Systematic position. The apple leaf bug, Neolygus neglectus, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. It is a widespread plant-feeding insect commonly found in temperate orchards, where it poses a risk to various fruit tree species.

Host plants and damage. The pest primarily targets apple and pear trees. By piercing plant tissues with their mouthparts, both nymphs and adults extract sap from buds, young leaves, and developing fruit. This feeding activity results in distorted leaf growth and the formation of necrotic spots on fruits, often leading to fruit deformity.

Biology and life cycle. The species overwinters in the egg stage, with eggs embedded in the bark of young twigs or branches. Nymphs emerge in spring during the bud-break stage of the host tree. They undergo five instars before reaching adulthood, with the population being most active during late spring and early summer.

Economic impact. The injury caused by Neolygus neglectus reduces the commercial value of the harvest. Heavy infestations can lead to significant fruit drop and the production of unmarketable, misshapen produce. Because the damage is often irreversible once the fruit has begun to form, early intervention is critical.

Control measures. Effective management depends on timely detection and appropriate application of control methods:

  • Winter pruning to remove branches that may harbor overwintering eggs.
  • Monitoring pest density using sticky traps or visual inspections during the budding phase.
  • Applying selective insecticides during the pre-blossom stage to suppress nymph populations.
