The green dung fly (scientific name Neomyia caesarion) belongs to the order Diptera and the family Muscidae. It is a common species characterized by a brilliant metallic green body. While it does not feed directly on plant tissues like traditional chewing pests, its role as a sanitary threat in agriculture is significant.
The primary damage associated with this insect is the mechanical transmission of pathogens. Because these flies frequently breed and feed on manure, carrion, and decaying organic matter, they carry a high load of bacteria, fungi, and parasites onto crops, severely compromising food safety for fresh produce.
The life cycle of Neomyia caesarion follows a complete metamorphosis consisting of the egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female deposits eggs in decomposing organic materials, where the larvae feed and develop rapidly in warm, moist conditions. Several generations can occur within a single growing season.
Agricultural damage is often indirect but critical. Produce such as tomatoes, leafy greens, and soft fruits that come into contact with these flies are easily contaminated. This poses a serious risk to vegetable quality, leading to potential spoilage and making the produce unsuitable for fresh market consumption.

- maintaining strict sanitary conditions around fields and greenhouses;
- prompt removal and disposal of waste or decaying vegetable debris;
- storing manure in covered, sealed containers to prevent oviposition;
- using mesh netting to exclude flies from greenhouses and storage facilities.
