Description
Systematic position. The maple aphid (lat. Neoprociphilus aceris) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest species that maintains a tight biological association with host plants of the genus Acer.
Affected crops. This aphid primarily targets maple trees, including Norway maple (Acer platanoides). Infestations are typically found on the undersides of leaves and along tender young shoots where the sap flow is most accessible to the colony.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of this species involves complex transitions and the formation of characteristic waxy secretions that protect the colonies. Overwintering occurs in the egg stage, typically protected within the crevices of the tree bark. With the arrival of spring, nymphs hatch and begin feeding, undergoing multiple molts to reach maturity.
Damage and economic significance. Infestations lead to leaf curling, chlorosis, and general tree weakening. The secretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which coats the foliage, interferes with photosynthesis, and significantly degrades the aesthetic value and health of the landscape trees.
Control measures. Effective control requires an integrated approach. During the growing season, systemic insecticides are highly effective in eliminating colonies. Early spring dormant oil treatments can also be used to target overwintering eggs. Regular monitoring of trees during the spring budding phase is essential for early detection and mitigation of potential outbreaks.
