Description
Neoseiulus cucumeris is a predatory mite belonging to the Phytoseiidae family, widely recognized in integrated pest management (IPM) as a beneficial biological control agent. Rather than being a plant pest, it is a specialized predator used extensively to suppress populations of various thrips species and spider mites in greenhouse environments.
This predatory mite primarily feeds on the first larval stages of thrips, such as the Western Flower Thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis). When its primary prey is scarce, Neoseiulus cucumeris can survive by feeding on pollen or other small mites, allowing it to establish on crops even before the appearance of significant pest pressure.
The life cycle of the mite comprises egg, larva, protonymph, deutonymph, and adult stages. Under optimal conditions of 20–25°C and relative humidity above 60%, the development cycle is completed within 7 to 10 days. The adults are highly mobile and actively search for prey across the leaf surfaces of vegetable and ornamental crops.
