Sunflower head fruit fly

The sunflower head fruit fly (Neotephritis finalis) is a dipteran insect belonging to the Tephritidae family. This pest is a specialized phytophage that targets plants within the Asteraceae family, with commercial sunflowers serving as its primary host for reproduction and larval development.

This insect primarily infests cultivated sunflower crops. Larvae feed exclusively on the floral parts of the plant, specifically targeting the developing achenes and the receptacle of the flower head. This infestation directly reduces the yield and the oil content of the seeds, posing an economic threat to large-scale sunflower production.

The biology of Neotephritis finalis consists of a complete life cycle including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. Females lay eggs inside the developing sunflower heads. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the receptacle, feeding on tissues for several weeks. Pupation typically occurs either within the dried sunflower head or in the soil surface beneath the plant.

The damage caused by this pest is twofold. First, direct feeding by larvae destroys the seeds, causing yield loss. Second, the feeding tunnels serve as entry points for pathogens, facilitating the development of fungal and bacterial rots, which further degrade the quality of the harvest and may cause the entire head to decay prematurely.

Management strategies for controlling Neotephritis finalis include the following:

• Implementing crop rotation to break the pest's life cycle.
• Removing wild host plants, such as wild sunflowers and thistles, near cultivated fields.
• Executing deep plowing after harvest to destroy over-wintering pupae in the soil.
• Applying systemic or contact insecticides during the budding and early flowering stages if field surveys indicate population thresholds are exceeded.
