Description
Systematic position. The Japanese gall aphid (Neothoracaphis yanonis) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is a specialized pest recognized for its ability to induce the formation of distinct galls on the foliage of its host plants, providing a unique microhabitat for the colony.
Host plants. The primary host for this species is the Japanese maple (Acer palmatum). Given the ornamental value of this tree species in landscaping and bonsai culture, the presence of these aphids significantly compromises the health and visual appeal of the plants in nurseries, gardens, and urban green spaces.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Neothoracaphis yanonis is closely synchronized with the growth stages of the maple tree. Following winter, the aphids emerge and settle on the developing leaves. The feeding process induces the host plant to produce gall tissue, which envelopes the insects and shields them from environmental stressors and most predators throughout their development stages.
Damage and economic impact. The primary symptom of infestation is the development of irregular, raised galls on the underside of the leaves. As the aphids extract nutrients from the leaf tissue, the leaves become distorted, undergo chlorosis, and may drop prematurely.
