The onion aphid (Neotoxoptera formosana) is a significant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Aphididae. It is recognized for its dark, often brownish-black body coloration, which makes it distinct from many other aphids that target agricultural crops. This species has successfully established itself in various regions, often causing localized but severe outbreaks in bulb crops.

This pest primarily attacks members of the Allium genus, including onions, garlic, leeks, and various ornamental bulbous plants like amaryllis. The aphids cluster on leaves and within the foliage, feeding on plant sap. Their presence is often detected by the discoloration and curling of the leaves, which hinders the normal growth and development of the vegetable.

The biology and lifecycle of Neotoxoptera formosana are characterized by rapid parthenogenetic reproduction, meaning females can produce offspring without mating. Under warm conditions, their population can explode within a short timeframe. This rapid generational turnover requires growers to be highly vigilant during the peak growing season to prevent mass colonization.

The economic impact of this aphid is twofold: direct damage through nutrient depletion and indirect damage through the transmission of plant viruses. By feeding on the plant, they weaken the host, making it more susceptible to environmental stress and secondary infections. Additionally, the secretion of honeydew attracts sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces the market quality of the harvest.
