Neotrionymus monstatus is a species of mealybug belonging to the Pseudococcidae family within the order Hemiptera. This pest has evolved to specifically target cereal crops, positioning itself as a significant threat to agricultural productivity in regions where small grains are cultivated at scale.

The primary host range for this pest includes wheat, barley, rye, and various wild grass species. These insects typically inhabit concealed areas of the host plants, such as the axils of leaves or the spaces between the leaf sheaths and the stems, which allows them to bypass visual scouting during early stages of infestation.

The biology of this species is characterized by incomplete metamorphosis. Females are often protected by a waxy, powdery secretion, which enhances their survival under unfavorable weather conditions. The dispersal of the species is primarily driven by the active movement of nymphs (crawlers) and wind dispersal, allowing them to expand their range across agricultural fields.

Feeding behavior involves sap extraction, which leads to plant stress, stunted growth, and leaf chlorosis. As a secondary consequence, the excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, which impairs photosynthesis and reduces overall grain quality. Severe infestations can lead to significant yield losses if not identified and addressed early in the growing season.
