Description
Neottiophilum praeustum is a species belonging to the family Neottiophilidae, order Diptera. Although not considered a major agricultural pest, it is of specific interest to forest pathology and arboriculture because its larvae exhibit parasitic tendencies, developing within plant tissues and occasionally in avian nests.
This pest is primarily found in the temperate climate zones of Europe. The larvae have adapted to feed on plant sap and tissue, targeting young shoots and bark. Their feeding activity leads to physiological stress in host trees and, in severe cases, contributes to the development of localized necrosis.
The life cycle includes a complete metamorphosis consisting of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The female lays eggs in bark crevices or on the surface of young shoots. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the cambium layer or beneath the bark, where they feed for several weeks prior to pupation.
Damage symptoms include the deformation of young growth, chlorosis, and premature desiccation of branches. Feeding sites often exhibit sap flow or gumming, which provides an entry point for secondary pathogens such as wood-decaying fungi and bacterial infections.
Control strategies involve a combination of approaches:
- sanitary pruning of infested branches;
- maintaining good arboricultural practices to enhance tree vigor;
- application of systemic insecticides during the peak adult flight period;
- regular inspection of bark and stem health during early spring.
