Bronze cutworm

The bronze cutworm (Nephelodes minians) is a moth species belonging to the family Noctuidae, order Lepidoptera. This insect is a notable agricultural pest in various regions of North America, where it can cause significant economic damage to cereal crops. The adult moth is characterized by its distinct bronze or reddish-brown coloration, which allows it to blend into its environment during daylight hours.

The species feeds on a variety of host plants, showing a strong preference for grasses and cereal crops. Its primary hosts include corn, winter wheat, spring wheat, oats, and barley, as well as various wild grasses found in pastures and along field edges. During outbreaks, the larvae may migrate to neighboring crops if their primary food source is depleted.

The life cycle of Nephelodes minians consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect typically overwinters as a larva in the soil or under surface debris. As temperatures rise in spring, the larvae resume feeding. Pupation occurs in the soil during the summer, followed by the emergence of adults that mate and lay eggs for the next generation or enter a period of dormancy until the following season.

The larvae are the most damaging stage, exhibiting nocturnal feeding behavior. They consume foliage, causing irregular notches on the leaves, and can completely defoliate plants. In severe infestations, the larvae may cut the stems of young plants at the base, leading to crop lodging and substantial yield losses that affect both grain quality and total harvest volume.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial for controlling this pest. Recommended strategies include regular crop rotation, deep tillage to disrupt the larval environment, and effective weed control along field borders. When larval populations reach economic thresholds, the application of registered insecticides is recommended, provided that all safety guidelines and pre-harvest intervals are strictly followed.
