Description

The genus Nephotettix, commonly known as green leafhoppers, belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. These insects are significant pests of rice, recognized worldwide for their ability to cause massive damage to production, particularly throughout the rice-growing regions of Asia.

The primary host for Nephotettix is rice (Oryza sativa). The economic importance of this pest stems not only from the direct sap-sucking damage it inflicts but also from its role as a primary vector for severe rice diseases, such as rice tungro and rice dwarf viruses, which significantly reduce yields.

The biology of the green leafhopper involves distinct developmental stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Adults are typically bright green, allowing for excellent camouflage among rice foliage.
