Description

The green rice leafhopper (Nephotettix nigropictus) is a significant pest belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is recognized as a major economic pest in Asian rice production, causing substantial losses through both direct feeding and the transmission of devastating viral diseases.

The primary host for this insect is rice (Oryza sativa). Both nymphs and adults inhabit the rice canopy, feeding on phloem sap. This feeding process results in the removal of essential nutrients and, more importantly, facilitates the inoculation of plants with various phytopathogens, most notably the tungro virus complex.

The biological cycle of this leafhopper progresses through egg, five nymphal instars, and adult stages. Females typically oviposit into the leaf sheaths. The duration of the life cycle is highly temperature-dependent, allowing for multiple generations to occur during the rice growing season. The insect is highly adaptive to the warm and humid climates preferred by rice crops.

Symptoms of infestation include leaf chlorosis, stunted growth, and the wilting of plants, commonly referred to as "hopperburn" during heavy infestations. The transmission of viruses is the most critical aspect of its damage, as these diseases significantly reduce yield and grain quality, often leading to total field failure if not managed early in the season.
