Green rice leafhopper

The green rice leafhopper (Nephotettix virescens) is a member of the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive pests of rice globally, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Its status as a primary pest is linked both to its feeding habits and its efficiency as a vector for various plant pathogens.

The primary host for this insect is rice (Oryza sativa). However, the pest is also capable of feeding on several wild grass species, which serve as reservoirs for the insect and the pathogens it carries. Understanding these host dynamics is crucial for developing effective management strategies in rice-growing landscapes.

The life cycle of the insect comprises three stages: egg, nymph (five instars), and adult. Females typically deposit their eggs within the leaf sheaths of the host plant. The development rate is highly sensitive to environmental factors, especially temperature and humidity, which determine the number of generations that can occur within a single cropping season.

Direct damage occurs when nymphs and adults suck phloem sap, causing yellowing and stunting of the rice plants. More importantly, Nephotettix virescens is the principal vector of the rice tungro disease. The virus causes severe stunting, reduced tiller production, and delayed flowering, leading to substantial yield losses in affected paddy fields.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this leafhopper. Key strategies include:

• Planting resistant rice cultivars that provide tolerance to both the leafhopper and the virus.
• Synchronized planting to break the insect's life cycle.
• Applying selective insecticides when population thresholds are exceeded.
• Promoting natural biological control by protecting predator populations.
• Managing water levels in paddies to reduce suitable breeding habitats.
