Nesidiocoris

Systematic position. Nesidiocoris tenuis belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Miridae. It is a well-known mirid bug often studied for its dual role in agro-ecosystems. While it can act as a beneficial predator of whiteflies and other small pests, it is increasingly recognized as a significant agricultural pest when it switches to plant-feeding habits.

Affected crops and damage symptoms. The bug primarily attacks solanaceous crops, with tomatoes being the most susceptible. Feeding damage is characterized by necrotic lesions on stems, petioles, and leaves. In severe infestations, the bug's saliva, which contains digestive enzymes, causes flower abortion, fruit set failure, and stunted growth of the apical meristem.

Biology and life cycle. Nesidiocoris tenuis undergoes hemimetabolous development, consisting of egg, nymphal (five instars), and adult stages. Both nymphs and adults are highly mobile. Their life cycle is heavily influenced by temperature, with warm greenhouse conditions favoring rapid maturation and high reproductive rates, allowing for multiple generations throughout the growing season.

Economic impact. The pest causes substantial economic losses by reducing both the quality and quantity of commercial vegetable production. By puncturing tissues to extract plant sap, the bugs cause structural damage to the plants. Furthermore, the persistent feeding leads to chlorosis and necrosis, significantly weakening the plant's physiological vigor and overall marketability.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential to control this bug. Strategies include:

• Regular monitoring using sticky traps and visual inspection of plant tops.
• Balancing predator populations to maintain biological control.
• Applying targeted insecticides only when population thresholds are exceeded.
• Sanitation practices, such as removing infested plant debris and weeds, to disrupt the bug's reproductive cycle.
