Nesidiocoris tenuis

Nesidiocoris tenuis is a species of mirid bug (Miridae family) often described in agricultural literature as having a dual role. While frequently used as a biocontrol agent against pests like the whitefly and Tuta absoluta, it can become a serious plant pest in greenhouse conditions when its prey becomes scarce, leading it to feed directly on plant sap.

This insect is particularly problematic for crops such as tomatoes and eggplants. When the population density of prey is low, the bugs pierce the leaves, stems, and fruits of the host plant. This feeding behavior causes physiological stress and direct physical damage that can compromise the health and vigor of the entire crop.

The life cycle of the species consists of an egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. The females prefer to oviposit inside the stem and petiole tissues, which provides protection from environmental factors and makes it difficult to control the population using standard contact insecticides. Optimal development occurs in the warm and humid climate typical of industrial greenhouses.

The damage caused by N. tenuis is characterized by necrotic rings or dark spots on the stems, leaf yellowing, and flower shedding. In severe cases, the feeding leads to the abortion of fruit sets and the deformation of the plant's terminal growth point, significantly reducing the overall yield and fruit quality of the greenhouse production.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are essential for controlling this insect. These include monitoring population numbers with sticky traps and maintaining a balance between the pest and its prey. If the population exceeds economic thresholds, selective pesticides or other biological methods must be employed to reduce the population density while minimizing the impact on non-target beneficial organisms.
