Description

Systematic position. The coconut mealybug (Nipaecoccus nipae) belongs to the order Hemiptera and the family Pseudococcidae. It is a sap-sucking insect characterized by a distinct waxy secretion that covers its body, providing protection against desiccation and natural enemies.

Host plants. This pest is a polyphagous insect that attacks a wide variety of plant species. It is commonly found on tropical trees such as palms, citrus, and avocado, as well as on various ornamental greenhouse plants including hibiscus, orchids, and anthuriums.

Biology and life cycle. Adult females are sedentary and typically remain fixed on the undersides of leaves or along stems. They produce eggs within white, cottony ovisacs. The mobile crawler stage (first-instar nymphs) is the primary method of dispersal, allowing the pest to colonize new plant parts or migrate to adjacent plants through wind or contact.

Damage and harmfulness. By sucking sap, the mealybug weakens the plant, causing leaf yellowing, stunting, and premature leaf drop. The excretion of honeydew promotes the growth of sooty mold, a black fungal layer that blocks light and gas exchange, further debilitating the plant and reducing its decorative value.

Control measures. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for effective control:

  • Regular monitoring of foliage, especially the undersides of leaves.
  • Applying systemic insecticides as a soil drench for long-lasting protection.
  • Using horticultural oils or insecticidal soaps to disrupt the waxy covering of the pests.
  • Quarantining infested plants immediately to prevent the spread of the colony within the garden.
