Nomadacris is a genus of locusts belonging to the order Orthoptera and the family Acrididae. The most significant species, Nomadacris septemfasciata, commonly known as the Red Locust, is a major agricultural pest found in sub-Saharan Africa. This insect is notorious for its ability to undergo phase transformation, leading to massive swarming events that can cross international borders.
This pest has a broad host range, primarily targeting graminaceous plants. Major agricultural crops under threat include maize, rice, sorghum, millet, and sugarcane. In addition to cultivated crops, Nomadacris thrives on various grasses in rangelands, which can lead to severe shortages of fodder for livestock, directly impacting the rural economy.
The life cycle of Nomadacris consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. The locust exhibits phenotypic plasticity, shifting between solitary and gregarious phases. In the gregarious phase, individuals undergo morphological changes, increase their activity levels, and aggregate into dense swarms. The damage caused by Nomadacris is devastating due to the sheer size of the swarms. As chewing insects, both nymphs and adults consume vast amounts of green biomass.
