It is recognized as a significant pest of agricultural crops, particularly in regions with suitable warm climates. The pest primarily targets cereal crops and forage grasses, including maize, sorghum, and millet. By feeding on leaves, stems, and shoots, the insect can cause complete defoliation of plants. The life cycle of this locust involves three distinct stages: egg, nymph, and adult. Eggs are typically laid in the soil in clusters, which allows the species to survive dry seasons. Once the conditions become favorable, nymphs emerge and undergo several molts, rapidly increasing in size and feeding capacity until they reach the winged adult stage, capable of long-distance migration.

Damage caused by this insect is characterized by the rapid reduction of biomass in infested fields. In agricultural settings, the economic impact is measured by reduced crop yields and the need for costly control measures. During outbreaks, the sheer number of insects can deplete pastures and destroy cereal fields in a matter of days if left unmanaged.
