Norvellina

Norvellina is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae (leafhoppers). These insects are recognized as significant agricultural pests that feed by sucking sap from various plant tissues, which disrupts the normal physiological processes of the host plant.

This pest affects a range of herbaceous plants and commercial crops. By piercing the plant cells and injecting saliva, these insects create pathways for secondary infections and draw essential nutrients from the vascular system, often leading to reduced yields and poor plant vigor.

The life cycle of Norvellina typically includes the egg stage, five nymphal instars, and the adult stage. Eggs are laid inside plant tissue, providing protection from many contact-based treatments. Given favorable temperatures, these insects can complete multiple generations within a single growing season, leading to rapid population build-ups.

Feeding damage is characterized by stippling, chlorosis, and sometimes leaf curling or wilting. Beyond direct feeding, the most severe economic impact often stems from their role as vectors for phytoplasmas and viruses, which can devastate entire crops by inducing systemic plant diseases.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach:

• maintaining field sanitation to eliminate weed reservoirs;
