Notonecta, commonly known as the backswimmer, is a genus of aquatic insects in the family Notonectidae. In agricultural and aquaculture contexts, these insects are considered significant predators that can severely impact the survival rates of fish fry and larvae in commercial ponds and hatchery facilities.
The biology of the backswimmer is characterized by its distinctive swimming style, where the insect moves upside down. Equipped with powerful oar-like hind legs, these bugs are excellent swimmers and are also capable of flight, which allows them to colonize new water bodies quickly and efficiently during the breeding season.
The life cycle of the Notonecta follows an incomplete metamorphosis, consisting of eggs, five nymphal stages, and adults. Females typically deposit their eggs on submerged vegetation. Both nymphs and adults are voracious predators that rely on sensory hairs to detect vibrations in the water, which helps them locate and capture their prey.
The damage caused by backswimmers is primarily economic, as they are capable of killing large numbers of young fish. They use a sharp, piercing proboscis to inject toxic saliva into their prey, which liquefies the internal tissues. This predatory behavior can significantly reduce the output of fry-rearing ponds if the population density of the bugs is not monitored.
Effective control measures include mechanical management, such as removing dense aquatic vegetation that provides shelter and spawning sites. Draining and drying out ponds between production cycles is a standard practice to eliminate existing populations. In some cases, chemical control or the use of surface-tension-reducing agents may be employed to prevent the insects from breathing.
