Description

Systematic position. The meadow plant bug (Notostira elongata) belongs to the order Hemiptera, family Miridae. It is a common pest in agricultural settings, specifically targeting cereal fields and grassy environments, often remaining overlooked until significant damage occurs.

Host plants. The primary targets of this pest are cereal crops such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats. In addition to cultivated plants, it thrives on various wild grasses including couch grass and meadow-grass, which allow the insect to survive and build up population density before moving into crop fields.

Biology and life cycle. Adults hibernate in plant debris, grass stubble, or the upper layer of soil. In the spring, they emerge and migrate to young crops to feed.
