Notoxus

Notoxus is a genus of beetles belonging to the family Anthicidae (ant-like flower beetles) within the order Coleoptera. These beetles are easily identified by the characteristic horn-like projection on the pronotum that extends over the head. While often considered generalists, their presence in agricultural systems can lead to localized damage, especially when environmental conditions favor their population growth.

These pests affect various crops, including cereals, legumes, and several vegetable species. They are frequently found in fields where crop residues are left on the soil surface, as these materials provide both a food source and shelter for the larvae. In agricultural settings, they are often attracted to moisture, making them common in areas with poor drainage or high humidity during the early growing season.

The life cycle of the Notoxus follows the pattern of complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Adults typically overwinter in the upper soil layers or beneath debris. Young plants are most vulnerable, as any damage to the stem or root collar can severely stunt growth or lead to plant death. Furthermore, feeding sites created by larvae or adults often facilitate the entry of soil-borne pathogens, increasing the incidence of seedling blights and other fungal diseases.
