Notus

Notus is a genus of insects belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae (leafhoppers). These insects are known for their sap-sucking mouthparts, which enable them to thrive on a variety of green plants, making them a recognized concern in agricultural systems.

These pests primarily target cereal crops, forage grasses, and occasionally vegetable crops. By extracting essential nutrients from the vascular tissue of plants, Notus can severely weaken host plants, especially during the peak stages of plant vegetative growth.

The biology of Notus involves incomplete metamorphosis, where the life cycle consists of egg, nymph, and adult stages. Females typically deposit eggs within the plant tissue. Depending on the environmental temperature and humidity, multiple generations can occur throughout the growing season.

Damage symptoms often include stunting, yellowing (chlorosis), and tip dieback of leaves. Beyond direct physical damage caused by sap extraction, Notus is often associated with the transmission of various plant pathogens, which can exacerbate the overall damage to crop stands.

Effective management strategies should focus on integrated pest control. Key methods include:
