Asian silk moth leafroller
Nycteola asiatica
Description
Systematic position. The Asian silk moth leafroller (scientific name: Nycteola asiatica) is a member of the order Lepidoptera and the family Noctuidae. Although its common name suggests it is a leafroller moth (Tortricidae), it actually belongs to the owlet moth family. It is a significant defoliator found across various regions in Asia and parts of Europe.
Host plants. This pest primarily targets trees within the Salicaceae family. The most susceptible hosts include various species of poplar (Populus) and willow (Salix). The insect is frequently observed in shelterbelts, urban parkland, and nurseries where these tree species are cultivated, leading to significant aesthetic and physiological damage.
Biology and lifecycle. The lifecycle consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The insect overwinters as an adult, hiding in bark crevices or tree hollows. In spring, females deposit eggs on the host leaves. Under favorable temperature conditions, the pest produces several overlapping generations throughout the growing season, which leads to a rapid build-up of the population.
Damage and impact. Young larvae initially skeletonize the underside of the leaves. As they grow, they use silk to fold or roll the leaves into tubes, where they feed and reside. This behavior results in leaf curling, yellowing, and premature senescence. Severe infestations lead to extensive defoliation, which severely reduces the tree's photosynthetic capacity and weakens its overall health.
Control measures. Integrated pest management strategies are necessary for effective control. Key measures include:
- Mechanical cleaning of tree trunks to remove overwintering sites.
- Sanitation, including the collection and destruction of infested leaf litter.
- Application of biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis.
- Chemical treatments with systemic insecticides if threshold levels are exceeded.
