During the dough stage of kernel development, these parrots are attracted to crop fields in large numbers. The biology of the species involves a highly nomadic lifestyle driven by the availability of food and water. Cockatiels follow the seasonal ripening of grasses and crops, often traveling vast distances across the landscape. Their breeding success and flock size are directly correlated with environmental conditions, leading to periodic population booms that intensify pressure on agricultural regions.

The nature of the damage inflicted by cockatiels is characterized by rapid depletion of crops and trampling of plants. Their high sociality leads to massive foraging events, where the combined weight of the flock and their feeding behavior can destroy entire sections of a field in a matter of hours, making them a recurring challenge for agricultural managers.
