Obelia dichotoma is a colonial hydroid species belonging to the order Leptothecata and the family Campanulariidae. In the context of aquaculture and marine agricultural systems, it is recognized as a significant fouling organism that colonizes artificial surfaces, causing operational challenges for farmers and technicians.

This species primarily impacts submerged infrastructure used in mariculture, including fish cages, shellfish ropes, aquaculture nets, and water intake filters. Because Obelia dichotoma is a passive suspension feeder, it thrives in environments with moderate water movement, making industrial aquaculture installations highly attractive habitats for their colonization.

The biological cycle of this hydroid involves an alternation of generations, progressing from a sessile polyp stage to a free-swimming medusa stage. The colonies grow by branching, forming dense, bush-like structures. Their rapid growth rate and ability to reproduce both sexually and asexually allow them to monopolize available space on artificial structures in very short periods.

The damage caused by Obelia dichotoma is primarily physical and physiological. Severe fouling increases the drag on cage nets, which can lead to structural failure during storms. More importantly, these colonies obstruct water flow, reducing the exchange of oxygen and nutrients needed for the cultured stock, ultimately leading to reduced growth rates and increased mortality of the farmed organisms.

To effectively protect infrastructure from Obelia dichotoma, farmers should implement the following measures:

• Application of specialized anti-fouling coatings that prevent the attachment of larval stages.
• Routine mechanical cleaning of nets and equipment using high-pressure sprayers or automated cleaning robots.
• Management of organic nutrient levels in the water column, as high levels of dissolved organic matter promote excessive hydroid growth.
• Strategic timing of equipment deployment to avoid peak settlement periods of hydroid larvae.
