Robinia gall midge

The Robinia gall midge (Obolodiplosis robiniae) is an invasive insect species belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. Originating from North America, it has spread across Europe and other regions, establishing itself as a notable pest of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) trees in urban and natural landscapes.

This pest is highly host-specific, primarily affecting the leaves of the Robinia tree. The feeding activity of the larvae disrupts the leaf structure, causing the tree to invest energy into producing galls rather than supporting normal growth, which weakens the overall health of the infested plant.

The biology of Obolodiplosis robiniae is characterized by a rapid development cycle. Adult females lay eggs on the surface of young leaflets. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the leaf tissue, inducing the formation of small, circular galls. Within these protective structures, the larvae complete their development, often resulting in several generations per year.

In terms of economic and ecological impact, the midge causes significant aesthetic and physiological damage. Severe infestations lead to premature leaf yellowing, necrosis, and premature leaf drop. While healthy trees usually survive, heavy, repetitive infestations can reduce tree vigor, increase susceptibility to other stressors, and ruin the appearance of ornamental plantings.

Managing the Robinia gall midge requires a strategy that focuses on interrupting the pest's life cycle. Control measures include:

• Sanitation efforts, such as removing and composting fallen leaves to destroy overwintering larvae.
• Applying systemic insecticides during early spring if the infestation levels exceed damage thresholds.
