The almond gall midge (Odinadiplosis amygdali) is a specialized insect pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Cecidomyiidae. It is recognized as a significant threat to almond cultivation, causing specific morphological changes in the host plant's vegetative organs.
This pest exclusively attacks almond trees, targeting the buds during their early stages of development. The high specificity of the insect means it can cause widespread infestation within a single orchard if environmental conditions favor its reproduction cycle.
The life cycle of the almond gall midge is synchronized with the phenology of the almond tree. Adult females lay eggs on developing buds. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the bud tissue to feed. Their feeding induces the plant to form characteristic galls—abnormal growths that protect the larvae during their development.
Damage caused by the pest is easily identified by the presence of swollen, deformed buds. These affected buds often fail to develop normally, leading to stunted or distorted shoots that may eventually die.
