Description

Taxonomic position. The banana stem weevil, known scientifically as Odoiporus longicollis, belongs to the order Coleoptera and the family Curculionidae. It is recognized as one of the most destructive pests affecting banana production globally, particularly in Southeast Asia and parts of Africa.

Host plants. The pest specifically targets members of the Musa genus. It infests both commercial banana plantations and wild relatives, causing devastating impacts on plant vitality by feeding extensively within the pseudostem.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle of Odoiporus longicollis is entirely dependent on the host plant. Female weevils lay eggs inside the pseudostem tissues. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the succulent interior, feeding on the plant fibers. The pupal stage also occurs inside the stem within a fibrous cocoon, after which the adult emerges to continue the cycle.

Damage and economic significance. Infestations lead to severe structural weakness of the banana plant. The tunneling activity destroys the vascular system, preventing the effective transport of nutrients and water. This results in stunted plant growth, yellowing leaves, the snapping of pseudostems, and substantial yield loss, often rendering entire clusters unproductive.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for effective control of this internal borer:

  • Strict field sanitation by removing and destroying infested pseudostems.
  • Selection of pest-free suckers for propagation to avoid early infestation.
  • Utilization of pheromone-based traps to capture adult weevils and monitor population levels.
  • Implementation of targeted insecticide treatments or application of entomopathogenic fungi to suppress larvae development.
