The Senegalese grasshopper (Oedaleus senegalensis) is a prominent member of the Acrididae family within the order Orthoptera. It is recognized as one of the most destructive agricultural pests in the Sahelian region of Africa, capable of forming dense swarms that migrate across vast distances and devastate food production systems.

This species is highly polyphagous, meaning it feeds on a wide range of botanical hosts. Primary crops at risk include pearl millet, sorghum, maize, rice, and wheat. In addition to cultivated grains, it also consumes various wild grasses, which often serve as an early reservoir for population growth before they transition to agricultural land.

The life cycle of O. senegalensis is uniquely adapted to tropical seasonal patterns. The insects lay eggs in the soil, which remain in diapause during dry periods. With the arrival of seasonal rains, the eggs hatch, and the grasshoppers undergo several nymphal stages before reaching adulthood. The rate of reproduction is highly dependent on rainfall frequency and vegetation density.

The economic damage caused by this pest is immense. During outbreaks, the sheer volume of grasshoppers can defoliate entire fields in a matter of days. Since nymphs tend to congregate in groups, local damage can be total, while adult swarms contribute to widespread regional crop failure, necessitating rapid intervention to prevent starvation and economic loss.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling O. senegalensis. Key strategies include:

• Regular field monitoring to detect early-stage nymph congregations (hopper bands).
• Timely application of chemical insecticides while insects are in the early nymphal stages.
• Implementation of biological controls using fungal agents like Metarhizium acridum.
• Soil cultivation practices such as tilling to disturb or destroy egg pods in the ground.
• Community-based early warning systems to coordinate mass control operations across large areas.
