Oegoconia is a genus of moths belonging to the family Autostichidae, within the order Lepidoptera. While often overlooked due to their small size, certain species within this genus are recognized as pests capable of colonizing stored grains, dried plant materials, and organic debris. Their presence in agricultural storage facilities can lead to significant economic losses if left unmanaged.
The primary hosts for these pests include a variety of seeds, grains, and dry plant-based products. The larvae are the stage responsible for the damage, as they burrow into the plant tissues to feed. By consuming the inner parts of seeds and grains, they not only reduce the quantity of the product but also negatively impact its viability for germination and its nutritional profile for consumption.
The biological cycle of Oegoconia follows the standard holometabolous development process. Adult moths mate and deposit eggs on or near potential food sources.
