Oligotrophus is a genus of small insects belonging to the family Cecidomyiidae (gall midges), within the order Diptera. These insects are primarily known for their ability to induce abnormal growths, or galls, on the tissues of various host plants. As specialized phytophagous insects, they are often host-specific, with many species targeting particular evergreen trees.

The primary hosts for this pest include conifers, especially juniper species. The larvae feed within the needles or developing shoots, causing the formation of distinct galls. This parasitic relationship interferes with the plant’s nutrient transport and photosynthesis, resulting in the weakening of the host plant and a loss of aesthetic value in ornamental gardens.

The life cycle of Oligotrophus is synchronized with the phenology of its host plant. Adult midges emerge during the spring growth flush to lay eggs on young foliage. Upon hatching, the larvae penetrate the plant tissue, triggering gall formation. They spend their larval stage protected within these structures, typically overwintering either inside the galls or in the leaf litter beneath the host tree.

Damage is characterized by visible swellings or deformities on the needles and stems. Heavy infestations can lead to premature needle drop, severe twig distortion, and dieback. While individual galls may not be lethal, the cumulative effect of a large population can significantly stress a tree, making it susceptible to secondary infections or environmental stressors.
