Small grasshopper

The small grasshopper (Omocestus petraeus) is a species of the order Orthoptera, specifically belonging to the family Acrididae (grasshoppers). This insect is commonly found in steppe and dry grassland habitats across Europe and parts of Asia, where it acts as a secondary or primary pest depending on local population density.

This pest primarily targets cereal crops, including wheat, barley, and various types of pasture grasses. Its feeding habits can cause significant economic losses in regions where monocultures are grown in proximity to undisturbed grassy borders, which often serve as primary breeding grounds for the species.

The life cycle of Omocestus petraeus typically involves overwintering in the egg stage, deposited in soil pods. Hatching occurs during late spring, triggered by rising temperatures. The insect progresses through five nymphal stages (instars) before reaching adulthood. During these stages, the grasshopper exhibits voracious feeding behavior, consuming leaf tissues extensively.

Damage symptoms include ragged leaf margins and, in severe infestations, complete defoliation of the crop. The pest causes harm by reducing the photosynthetic surface of the plants, which leads to stunted growth and lower yield quality. In extreme cases, complete stand destruction can occur if control measures are not implemented promptly.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is essential for controlling this grasshopper. Cultural practices, such as mechanical soil cultivation (disking) of fallow areas and field boundaries, are effective at destroying egg pods. When populations exceed economic thresholds, chemical control using approved insecticides—applied during the nymphal stages—remains the most effective strategy for mitigation.
