Oncastichus goughi is a species of parasitic wasp belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Eulophidae. It is widely recognized by entomologists and forest pathologists as a significant pest that specifically targets and infests various species of Eucalyptus trees.

This insect primarily attacks the foliage of Eucalyptus, causing extensive damage to young leaves and growing shoots. As an invasive species in many parts of the world, it poses a recurring challenge for forestry management, particularly in plantations where Eucalyptus is grown for pulp, oil, or ornamental purposes.

The life cycle of Oncastichus goughi involves oviposition into the host plant tissue. Once the eggs hatch, the developing larvae feed within the leaf blades. This internal feeding pattern is the main driver of the physiological stress experienced by the host tree, leading to distorted growth and reduced photosynthetic capacity.

The damage caused by the wasp is distinct and can be identified by the following signs:

• Formation of leaf galls or necrotic tissue patches;
• Distortion and curling of developing young leaves;
• Increased rate of leaf drop;
• Overall weakening of the host tree’s vigor.

Given the difficulty of applying chemical insecticides in large forestry environments, research is currently focused on biological control methods, specifically identifying and introducing native parasitoids that serve as natural enemies to control the wasp population effectively.
