Oncometopia facialis is a species of leafhopper belonging to the order Hemiptera and the family Cicadellidae. This sap-sucking insect is primarily found in the Neotropical regions. It is highly mobile and possesses strong jumping capabilities, making it a difficult pest to monitor and manage effectively in commercial orchards and plantations.

The pest causes significant damage to a wide range of economically important crops, including citrus trees, grapevines, and various ornamental plants. Both nymphs and adults feed by extracting plant sap from the phloem, which directly compromises the physiological processes of the host plant. Continuous feeding stress leads to significant yield losses over time.

The lifecycle of Oncometopia facialis involves incomplete metamorphosis, consisting of the egg, nymphal stages, and the adult stage. Females insert their eggs into plant tissues using a specialized ovipositor. Under favorable warm temperatures, the pest completes multiple generations annually, leading to rapid population explosions that can quickly overwhelm unprepared crops.

Beyond direct feeding damage, the primary threat posed by Oncometopia facialis is its role as an efficient vector of plant pathogens. It is known to transmit Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterium responsible for severe diseases such as citrus variegated chlorosis and Pierce's disease in grapes. The spread of these pathogens often results in total crop loss if not managed aggressively.

• Application of systemic and contact insecticides during peak nymph emergence.
