Oncometopia nigricans is a species of sharpshooter leafhopper belonging to the family Cicadellidae within the order Hemiptera. This insect is recognized as a significant agricultural pest, particularly in the Americas, where it poses a constant threat to a variety of woody and herbaceous plants due to its feeding habits and disease transmission capabilities.

The host range of this pest is quite diverse, encompassing ornamental plants, fruit-bearing trees, and specialty crops. Key targets include citrus species, grapevines, hibiscus, and oleander. Because it feeds on the xylem fluid of plants, the leafhopper significantly depletes the plant's nutrient reserves, leading to chlorosis, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the eventual death of the affected plant.
