Description

Systematic position: The woodlouse (genus Oniscus) is classified within the class Malacostraca, order Isopoda, and family Oniscidae. These organisms represent a unique group of crustaceans that have adapted to terrestrial life. However, they remain highly dependent on high moisture levels for survival because their respiratory organs function similarly to gills and require a moist environment to exchange gases effectively.

Biology and life cycle: The lifecycle of a woodlouse is strictly bound to humid conditions. Female woodlice carry their eggs in a specialized brood pouch called a marsupium on their underside. Once hatched, the juveniles resemble miniature adults and undergo several molts as they grow. They are largely nocturnal, spending daylight hours hidden under stones, plant debris, mulch, or within soil crevices where humidity is high.

Affected crops: Woodlice are particularly problematic in greenhouse environments, nursery beds, and damp garden patches. They affect a wide range of plants, including strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes, leafy greens, and various ornamental seedlings. Crops with tender stems or fruits that rest directly on damp soil are at the highest risk of being targeted by these pests.

Nature of damage and harm: The damage caused by woodlice is primarily mechanical. They use their specialized mouthparts to feed on tender plant tissues, resulting in holes in leaves, stem damage, and deep feeding lesions on fruits and roots. Besides direct damage, their presence creates entry points for various phytopathogens, including fungi and bacteria, which can lead to rapid rot and further plant health deterioration.

Control measures: Management of woodlouse populations focuses on habitat modification to make conditions less favorable for their survival:

  • Improving greenhouse ventilation and soil drainage to reduce overall ambient and substrate humidity.
  • Removing piles of wood, stones, and rotting organic waste that serve as daytime refuges for the pest.
  • Managing mulch layers to ensure they do not stay excessively wet near the stems of vulnerable plants.
  • Using physical barriers or targeted baiting techniques in cases of high population density to reduce pressure on young crops.
