Onychiurus (lat. Onychiurus) belongs to the order Collembola (springtails), family Onychiuridae. These minute, blind, and pigmentless arthropods dwell exclusively in the soil. Unlike many other soil inhabitants, they are highly specialized for living within soil pores, navigating through the earth to feed on organic matter or tender plant tissues located in the root zone.

These pests affect a diverse range of crops. They are particularly dangerous to germinating seeds, fragile seedlings, and the subterranean parts of established plants. Sugar beets, cereals, potatoes, and greenhouse vegetables are highly susceptible to Onychiurus infestation, especially in fields with high organic matter content and consistent moisture levels that favor their rapid development.
