The eucalyptus gall wasp (Ophelimus maskelli) is a small insect belonging to the order Hymenoptera and the family Eulophidae. Originally endemic to Australia, this pest has become a significant invasive species in various parts of the world where eucalyptus trees are cultivated, posing a threat to forest health and urban landscaping.
This wasp primarily targets various species of the Eucalyptus genus. The insect is highly host-specific, completing its entire larval development phase inside the leaf tissue of the host plant. The plant responds to the presence of the larva by creating a gall, which serves as both a nutritional source and a physical shield for the developing insect.
The biological cycle of the wasp is tightly synchronized with the growth phases of the eucalyptus tree. After fertilization, the female deposits eggs directly into the leaf lamina.
