Stem mining fly
Ophiomyia centrosematis
Description
Ophiomyia centrosematis is a significant agricultural pest belonging to the Agromyzidae family within the order Diptera. This species is widely recognized for its ability to damage various leguminous crops, often causing severe economic losses in tropical and subtropical climates where host plants are grown extensively.
The primary hosts of this pest include a broad array of legumes, most notably soybeans (Glycine max), cowpeas, beans, and various pulses. Because the larvae develop internally within the stem tissues, the pest often goes unnoticed until the plants begin to show outward symptoms of wilting or stunted growth.
The biological cycle involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult female deposits eggs in the foliage or the stems of young plants. Upon hatching, the larvae mine their way down into the plant stems towards the root zone, where they feed and subsequently pupate, completing their metamorphosis inside the host plant.
The damage caused by Ophiomyia centrosematis is primarily systemic. By mining the vascular tissues of the stem, the larvae disrupt the transport of nutrients and water, which often results in secondary infections, stem rot, plant lodging, and in severe cases, the complete death of the seedling. This makes the species a major threat during the early vegetative stages of plant development.
- Implementing crop rotation cycles to disrupt the pest life cycle.
- Using systemic seed treatments to protect young seedlings.
- Removing and destroying weeds that serve as alternative hosts.
- Monitoring adult population levels with yellow sticky traps.
- Applying insecticides during the peak adult flight period.
Effective management of this pest requires a proactive approach centered on field scouting and integrated pest management (IPM) practices. By combining cultural methods, such as adjusting planting dates, with targeted chemical interventions, farmers can effectively reduce the population pressure and safeguard their legume crops from the devastating impact of this stem miner.
