The daylily miner fly (Ophiomyia kwansonis) is a specific pest known for infesting plants of the genus Hemerocallis. As a member of the Agromyzidae family, this insect has become a significant concern for nurseries and home gardeners who specialize in growing daylilies, due to its ability to severely impact plant health and bloom quality.

Taxonomically, this species belongs to the order Diptera. Adult flies are typically very small and often go unnoticed by casual observers. They are highly host-specific, meaning they have evolved to rely almost exclusively on daylilies to complete their life cycle, making them a persistent threat in established collections.

Regarding the life cycle, the adult female inserts eggs into the epidermis of the host plant. The larvae then hatch and tunnel through the stems, leaves, or scapes, creating visible mines. Pupation occurs directly within the plant tissue, which serves as a protective chamber and significantly complicates standard pest control efforts.

The primary damage caused by Ophiomyia kwansonis includes distorted or stunted scapes and premature yellowing or necrosis of leaves. In severe infestations, the flower buds may fail to develop or open properly, drastically reducing the aesthetic and commercial value of the plants. Chronic infestation can lead to a gradual decline in the plant's overall vigor.

Control measures must be multifaceted to be effective. The most crucial agronomic step is sanitation: identifying and removing infested plant material before the next generation of adults emerges. Chemical control requires the use of systemic insecticides that can reach the larvae hidden inside the stems, applied during peak periods of adult flight.
