Lantana seed fly

The Lantana seed fly (Ophiomyia lantanae) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the family Agromyzidae. It is widely recognized in agronomy and ecology as a biological control agent introduced to various parts of the world to manage the spread of the invasive shrub Lantana camara.

This species is highly host-specific, feeding exclusively on plants within the Lantana genus. Unlike leaf-mining flies that target foliage, the Lantana seed fly focuses its destructive activity on the reproductive structures of the plant, specifically developing flowers and fruit.

The life cycle of Ophiomyia lantanae is perfectly synchronized with the plant's flowering season. The adult female deposits eggs into the green, developing berries. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the fruit, feeding on the fleshy interior and developing seeds, which effectively prevents the plant from producing viable offspring.

The damage caused by the larvae is characterized by the internal tunneling of the fruit, leading to premature drop and significant reduction in seed viability. In the context of invasive species management, this is a beneficial effect, but for nursery production of ornamental Lantana, it represents a pest pressure that affects aesthetic quality and marketable yield.

Management strategies for this fly are primarily focused on maintaining the visual quality of ornamental plants. Effective protection includes:

• Systemic insecticide treatments applied during the onset of the flowering period.
• Frequent scouting to detect early signs of fruit infestation.
• Pruning and destroying infested flower clusters to reduce the local population of the fly.
• Integration of cultural practices that minimize the fly's access to the developing fruit heads.
