Description

The bean fly (Ophiomyia phaseoli) is a destructive pest belonging to the order Diptera and the family Agromyzidae. It is widely recognized as a primary threat to legumes, causing significant economic losses in tropical and subtropical agriculture, particularly in Africa and Asia.

This pest has a specific affinity for legumes, with common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), cowpea, soybean, and mung bean being the most frequent hosts. It is particularly devastating during the seedling stage, as the larvae attack the plant when it is most vulnerable to systemic damage.

The biological cycle of the bean fly involves four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs in the leaf tissue. Upon hatching, the larvae mine their way through the leaf veins down to the stem and finally to the root collar, where they pupate inside the plant tissue.

Damage is characterized by stunted growth, yellowing, and eventually the death of seedlings due to the severing of vascular tissues. The tunnels created by the larvae serve as entry points for secondary fungal infections, which further accelerate the decline of the plant health.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies for the bean fly include:

  • Treating seeds with systemic insecticides prior to planting.
  • Practicing crop rotation with non-leguminous crops to break the life cycle.
  • Applying soil mounding around the base of the stems to encourage adventitious root growth.
  • Adjusting sowing dates to avoid peak periods of adult fly activity.
  • Removing and destroying infested plant debris immediately after harvest to reduce pest carryover.
